Virtues of the public development model

We are frequently asked (primarily by business people) why SilverStripe is developed with an open development model.

People generally assume we get some form of contribution by outside developers, which is true, but wonder just how useful or worthwhile it is. All we can offer is that a closed-development model would never encourage genius contributions like this...

Internet People

While I get a horde of links, videos, photos and nigerian scams to deliberate upon each day, I really felt I had to share this pure genius. That is, until the finale of advertisements undid the whole thing; a real pity. Continuing in the spirit of memory lane, but coming in a close second, is this MSDOS 5 advertisement.

Coworking, copy-writing and Abba

What do coworking, copy writing and Abba have in common? Well, yes, they're all some of the most interesting and humourous videos I've seen in the past 24 hours, but it demonstrates the power of visual communication and story telling. Coworking was a term I first heard from Tara Hunt to the only style of working environment I identify with (SilverStripe has been sharing offices with like-minded individuals for years), but this is the first time I can confidently tell both my grandma and a hardened capitalist businessman on its virtues. What's interesting is that the one story is versatile enough for such different audiences.  I challenge you to do this with text alone!

And the others? With Copy Goes Here I think it will be a while before I experience another story this well constructed. One that gently and earnestly demonstrates a companies' abilities without ambushing or fooling you, and instead provides you with ten minutes to relax. I thought their Copy Goes Here homepage was great too. Their Abba skit just shows that once you see one good film, any silly entertainment thereafter can be used to create a periphery around it ...
