Google Summer of Code Fruit #9: Safari3 Support

Posted by Sigurd on 16 July 2007

Although Apple has installed their Safari browser as the way to access the web on all new Macintoshes for a few years, the percentage of visitors is still dominated by other browsers.

For instance, on silverstripe.com, Safari accounts for 5% of traffic, after Microsoft Internet Explorer (24%) and FireFox (64%), although most websites have far more IE.

Nonetheless, supporting Safari makes SilverStripe better, and helps the web community by encouraging them off older, broken browsers. Importantly, Apple has been working hard, and Safari's new version 3 beta (also available for Windows) has a lot  more features and so its much easier for us to get it working with SilverStripe now. (Currently many parts of SilverStripe show the following error in Safari3... )

Meg Risen is working on ensuring Safari plays happy when we release SilverStripe 2.1 in a few months. SilverStripe 2.1 will also benefit from an updated WYSIWYG editor (Tiny MCE 2.1.1.1) that is hoped will make pasting in Microsoft Word content a more enjoyable experience.

  • I just commented on Segovia's blog (http://www.HowIMadeMyFirstDollar.com) in your favor to win the fight against IE.

I would have to say that I'm a strong advocate and supporter of the rage against Microsoft and without getting loud and belligerent (which I'll leave it up to Harvey Kane at http://www.ragepank.com/articles/107/the-death-of-ie/ ) I think you guys are on to something. Keep up the good work.
